Things to keep in mind before going for a Public Relations degree

My cousin, a new graduate, turned up the other day asking about Public Relations degrees for higher studies. Utterly confused as all fresh graduates are, she didn’t seem to know much about it. Pieces of information from friends couldn’t clear her doubts as to what exactly the term Public Relations or PR meant, and what it does. So, I thought of listing down the few things that I told her, and hope it will help other Advertising and Public Relation aspirants.

Public Relations or PR is the new buzz word in the diverse world of Marketing, nowadays. PR is, in reality much more than only glamour and blitz as commonly perceived. It has become an integral part of any company these days as it reaches out to a large audience without incurring the expenses of traditional advertising.

To put it in simpler words, it is nothing but maintaining a positive image of an organization in the eyes of the ‘Public’, which might be the company’s customers, stakeholders, or even the Government! An increasing trend has been noticed wherein celebrities and political parties are employing PR agencies to maintain and improve their image and perception.

Advertising and PR

Needless to say, a Public Relations degree has been one of the most sought after degrees during the past few years. Students pursuing Public Relations would gain an in depth knowledge of employing communication and multimedia techniques to maintain and manipulate public opinion. PR courses are offered to both under and post graduate students, but I would suggest going for a specified post-graduation degree as it would help widen your horizon of knowledge.

Lots of reputed institutions are offering PR and advertising degrees. To all those who are looking for a career in PR can check them out and gather information, thanks to internet! Lastly, for all the baffled graduates seeking a degree in PR, I would say: Be clear of WHAT you would be doing as a PR professional by knowing what exactly PR stands for, and then head towards your destination!

Become a more productive event manager

The life of event managers may seem very exciting but they need to get their act together to accomplish multiple tasks at hand. Compromising on productivity is really not an option for them. If you are an aspiring event manager and have pursued or want to pursue one of the good event management courses available, here are some tips for you:

Event Management Courses

1.Checklists
Even those not involved in the profession of event management construct checklists. It is all the more important for the event managers. Spend some time every morning to plan out your day. It would keep you organized and the tasks on priority can be completed faster.

2.Mark events on a calendar
Make use of the highly useful applications on your phone and keep marking events on those. Being an event manager, you can’t afford to finish work on a last minute basis. Keeping a track of events would also help you make daily checklists.

3.Focus on the task at hand
Give your best to the task at hand. Multi-tasking is important but it diverts the attention of the person. Unless you are extremely efficient at multi-tasking, do the best that you can on the task on priority.

4.Break the bigger tasks into smaller ones
Instead of getting worried due to the magnitude of the project, break down the big project into smaller tasks. Then, as mentioned before, direct all your energy towards the tasks one by one.

5.Identify your most productive time of the day

Some people work well in early mornings and others are more comfortable working at night time. You identify which time suits you the best and work accordingly. However, a career in event management requires you to match your timings with those of others too. You have to strike a balance between working individually in your own time and working with others according to their work schedules and then achieve the best possible results.

You would be surprised to know about my friend who pursued one of the well-known public relations degree and then changed her career line by entering the business of event management. What are your plans?

The Importance of Crisis Communications

The field of advertising and public relations is all about upholding a positive and favourable image of an individual, product, brand, or company in the eyes of the public, or more specifically the target audience. As public relations surveys public opinion and projects a positive image, most of the times, the situation is smooth sailing, say pros of Event Management Colleges In Delhi.

But that doesn’t mean you can sit back and relax. As bright and shiny as things might seem to be when everything runs smoothly, once in a blue moon, there’s the chance of a major crisis situation arising. And that’s where ‘Crisis Communication’ comes into the picture.  For any organisation, it’s important to understand that such situations may come up and take you by surprise –an unwelcome and unpredictable surprise.

public relations internships

In the world of advertising and public relations, a crisis is defined as an unpredicted situation that can seriously threaten the reputation of an individual, brand, or company. As high-flying as am organisation might be they are still susceptible to crises. And if there is no system in place to deal with such crisis situations, then organisations can find themselves neck deep in an extremely unfavourable situation –thereby incurring more damages.

Crisis Communications is a field that is now up and coming because people have realised the importance of dealing with crises –promptly and smartly. Public Relations courses and Event Management Courses and public relations internships are now teaching students about the agenda of Crisis Management in order to prepare them and equip them to deal with such problems as and when they arise.

If crises are not adequately dealt with, then the consequences can be disastrous. Stakeholders involved will withdraw and ultimately –an individual, brand or company may be doomed. So while such situations arise out of the blue, it’s imperative to have a system in place to deal with the fallout.

What Does a PR Agency Do?

When you think of all the big brand names, is there anything negative that comes to mind? Hardly. That’s the magic of Public Relations.

Public Relations Agencies work behind the scenes to create a favourable and positive image of product, brand or company in the eyes of the general population –the public.

In an attempt to emphasise a human-interest angle on behalf of the client, public relations careers are as dynamic as they come! So read on to get a brief grasp of what PR really entails, and perhaps you could even sign up for some Public Relations Courses if it sounds like a good career move (which it obviously will, PR is the bomb!).

Public Relation career

PR is primarily based on understanding the opinion of the public. The views that the common man holds regarding a brand or company are fundamental to incorporate changes in the organisation and plans of promotion. So you will find that PR agencies analyse and interpret public opinion –whether good or bad, to build on a PR plan for the client. But it’s not just about analyzing the current public opinion; it’s also about anticipating it. And that’s how a PR agency keeps a client two steps ahead at all times!

Without the public, a company would be nothing, so public relations careers entail keeping the public informed. And so PR agencies have to research, formulate, evaluate and the policies and plans of the client so as to manage the public opinion. This also involves making recommendations to the management and counseling them regarding important decisions that will affect the public opinion.

And of course, planning out PR strategies to promote the client! And when there’s a crisis situation, PR comes to the rescue! So if any of this has at all sparked your fancy, then go ahead and sign up for Public Relations Courses to get a better understanding and make a career of PR.

Start-Ups: What to Expect from PR Agencies

Living in a time where advertising and public relations can make or break your brand, service or company, hiring just the right advertising and PR agency is of utmost importance.

And especially if you’re a start-up venture, then boy is it going to be hard for you to get word about town! And that’s where a public relations agency steps in, and does the job for you. But to ensure a job well done, you need to be on top of them, and expect a certain standard of services provided.

Advertisement and Public relations

So an advertising and PR agency you’re hiring needs to be crisp and effective about planning. For a start-up, there is absolutely no precedent to go by, so the advertising and public relations need to be built ground up. And the crux of any construction plan is a strong foundation. A PR agency is expected to plan strategically and counsel you about how to go about advertising and publicising your start-up.

But before the PR firm gets on with the planning, you need to be articulate about what you want, so that they can chart it out professionally. Whilst goals may change with time, an overarching set of goals and objectives should be in place to ensure smooth operation and success.

In order to understand your start-up, a PR agency needs to listen and empathise with what you are and what your needs are; this is key to any successful way forward. The analytical and open minds of PR agencies are just as intent listeners as they are talkers. But of course, you need an agency that doesn’t just give you the reigns the whole time, but also pushes back and takes charge. The expertise of such an agency is what you’re hiring them for, right? So you need to sit back and let them take control because they know what they’re doing.

You need an agency that will propose plan after plan, assess and reassess constantly, and own up to the game and makes it happen, while still admitting to errors and displaying humility and confidence at the same time.

Most of all, you need a public relations agency that always stays on top of the game, with novel and creative ideas up their sleeve at all times!

You don’t even need to have studied Public Relations Courses to figure out that with the use of PR, awareness is created about your company. It thereby creates a stronger company image and perception in the eyes of the target audiences by projecting an alluring and positive image of the company, brand or person to the masses.
