There are millions of courses for the more serious subjects like math's, science, engineering, computers, and more. Now after a lot of years and battles, finally subjects like English, history and political science are being seen as legitimate subjects. But there are still some areas where taking a course is seen as a waste of time. These are the areas that are more entrenched in the creative side, even more than English and all. Areas like photography, interior decoration, event management and more are professional areas, and taking a course for them is deemed unnecessary by many.

Public Relations- Turning point in my career

I had done my BBA in my graduation and didn’t know much what to do after that. One of my cousins was working in the PR industry and then, and as it is like with every family, I received my share of career sermon from her. It appeared to be a sermon only till the time I understood what exactly she does. It generated interest in me and I started to look for colleges offering Public Relations degree.

I happened to join one of the renowned colleges in Delhi which offers a full time Mass communication course of 2 years. I was introduced to world of media in a different light and I must say my decision to get a post graduation degree was worth it. I came to know what exactly a PR firm does and how it has become indispensible for today’s corporate world. The best thing that happened to me during this course was one of the public relations internships form aaft that I landed onto. Arranged by our college itself, this was an experience which made me come close to the world of Public Relations and undoubtedly one of my stepping stones towards my career.

I learnt communication- both written and verbal is an integral part of Public Relations and that improving you communication skills is the best way to stay ahead in this career. Not only is this, staying updated with the world’s news another thing that you have to get habituated to. Handling clients from diverse backgrounds become easy if you do so.

Public Relations: Lay the foundation

The purpose of public relations, a term I am sure you must have heard of, is to manage a company’s reputation by building as well as maintaining positive relationships with the target audience. Well-established organisations, instead of doing the work in-house, often outsource the work to PR agencies. This allows them to establish an impactful brand image without getting diverted from their core business functions. Some silly media-outreach mistakes

Good publicity from a third party always benefits a new organisation. That’s because third party coverage is believed to be unbiased and more useful. But new entrepreneurs in their excitement to get media coverage at times make some unfortunate mistakes that ultimately result in failure of their primary objective. So here are some mistakes you would want to avoid as a new entrepreneur:


1.Getting in touch with the wrong people

By wrong people, I mean those whose scope of work is different and covering your product or service does not come under their work profile. Doing so is just wastage of your time as well as theirs. It is important do your research beforehand so that you send your e-mails only to a few but right people who may actually be able to benefit you.

2.Sending e-mails from a generic e-mail address

Media people already get a lot of junk mails every day. Sending your request or your information about your business through a generic e-mail address only reduces the chances of it being read by the person you are sending it to. A friend of mine who did many public relations internships before she finally settled in one company, told me that e-mails sent with the company’s domain always receive a better response.

3.Sending a copied and pasted message

Sending the same message to different people may save you time, but more often than not, it would fail to get you results. Personalised messages may take more of your time but they will always stand out and may even get you a quicker response.

4.Using incorrect grammar

While you don’t need to be a pro at this, but getting your basic grammar right is the least you can do. Considering that writing is a major portion of journalists’ work, even a silly error can put them off. Make sure you carefully proofread the content before sending out the mail.

Integrated Marketing Communication over Mass Communication

While I was pursuing my graduation, I had my minds set in the field of communication. I was introduced to Advertising as a subject and I quite liked it. The various forms of communications intrigued me; be it Advertising or Public relations. I decided to take up communications as my specialization in my masters. I looked for a lot of courses offered in India, but I did not found them the way I was looking for. Mass communication was something I was not looking for, while most of the colleges offered mass communications.


I finally got what I wanted after speaking to a distant cousin in the same field. She suggested me of her college where ‘Integrated Marketing Communication’ was the course offered. It was a culminated curriculum of Mass communication and Advertising courses in one. According to her, the South Delhi college imprints the marketing theories and concepts in the minds of the students and the communication as a means to achieve the success of marketing.

As the name suggests, the course was an integration of communication and marketing and it quenched my interest of both. I chose to join the college, and it was a decision which I would never regret! The hectic schedule and presentations in all the semesters of the college opened avenues in the field of Public relations careers, jobs in Event management, Market research, Journalism, Advertising etc. We were in constant touch with our creative self and we were allotted with projects which nurtured or analytical skills as well. In all, we were given a holistic training and till date, I benefit from what I learnt in my college. Thanks to the excellent faculty who would give us industry insights and classes used to turn into discussion rooms. I found the course way liberating than some mass communication course. Event Management- A passion to pursue

It’s been a while I am running an Event Management company. You can say it is the fruit of my years of passion. I always dreamt of opening my own Event Company since the time I got introduces to ‘Event Management’ as a subject while I was pursuing my graduation in Mass communication. I was instantly drawn towards it as I always had hundreds of ideas running in my head whenever it came to organizing a party or a function. I was always the one who people used to turn to when an event needed to be organized- be it in college, or in the family.

Pieces of information from friends couldn’t clear her doubts as to what exactly the term Public Relations or PR meant, and what it does. The life of event managers may seem very exciting but they need to get their act together to accomplish multiple tasks at hand. Compromising on productivity is really not an option for them.
